How to play Ticket to Ride, in brief
Ticket to Ride has you claiming railway routes across North America to link the cities on your secret destination tickets. Routes, tickets and the longest line of track all score.
- Take trains and ticketsEach player takes 45 trains and 4 train cards, and keeps at least 2 of the tickets dealt. Turn 5 train cards face up.
- Do one thing a turnDraw 2 train cards, face up or from the deck; claim one route; or draw 3 tickets and keep at least 1. A face-up locomotive (wild) uses both draws.
- Claim a routePlay as many cards of the route’s color as it has spaces, and fill it with your trains. Any one color fits a gray route.
- Run low on trainsWhen someone ends a turn with 2 or fewer trains, everyone gets one last turn.
Routes as you go, tickets at the end.
Most of your points move around the board’s track during play, one route at a time. The tickets in your hand stay secret until the end, and they can push you up or pull you down.

| End: each ticket you did notEvery ticket you kept counts, finished or not | Minus its value |
| End: the longest continuous pathTied players all score it | 10 |
- Score each route as you claim itMove your marker on the track by the route table: a 6-train route is worth 15, not 6.
- Watch for 2 trainsWhen a player ends a turn with 2 or fewer trains left, everyone, that player included, takes one more turn. Then the game ends.
- Reveal the ticketsAdd each ticket whose two cities you joined with your own trains. Subtract each one you kept but did not finish.
- Give the longest path 10Find the longest unbroken line of each player’s trains. It may loop, but no train counts twice. The longest scores 10.
- Total it upTrack, plus tickets made, minus tickets missed, plus 10 for the path. A tie goes to the most completed tickets, then to whoever holds the longest path card.
Tickets decide it: Priya wins with 87.
Three players at the end of a game on the USA map, with route points already on the track: Priya 61, You 70, Jonas 55. Then the tickets come out, and Priya has the longest path. This is the game on the Scorepad above.

Common Ticket to Ride scoring mistakes
- Forgetting missed ticketsEvery ticket you kept counts at the end. One you did not finish costs its full value.
- Scoring a route by its trainsUse the table: 3 trains is 4 points, 4 is 7, 5 is 10 and 6 is 15.
- Counting a branching networkThe longest path is one continuous line. It may loop back on itself, but no train is counted twice.
- Stopping at 2 trainsThe player who gets down to 2 or fewer still takes one more turn, and so does everyone else.
Ticket to Ride scoring, answered

- What happens if you don’t complete a ticket in Ticket to Ride?
- You subtract its value from your score. Every ticket you kept counts at the end, finished or not.

Ticket to Ride score sheet
The board keeps the route points, so this sheet is for the end: the track, both kinds of ticket, the longest path and Europe’s stations, for up to five players.
Score another game
Europe adds 8-train routes worth 21 and 3 stations per player (each one you never build is worth 4), keeps the 10-point bonus as the European Express, and breaks a tie on completed tickets, then fewest stations used, then the Express. Other maps have longer routes. Rules checked on 19 October 2026 against the rulebook, the Europe rulebook and Wikipedia. Ticket to Ride is a trademark of Days of Wonder.
