How to score Spirit Island

Spirit Island scoring is simple, because there are no points to win: the spirits win or lose together. You win by clearing the island of what the Terror Level asks, or by emptying the Fear Deck. You lose if the island takes too much blight, any spirit loses its last presence on the island, or you need to explore with the Invader deck empty.

  • About 90 to 120 minutes
  • Ends at a win or a loss
  • Everyone wins or loses together

How to play

How to play Spirit Island, in brief

In Spirit Island you all play on one side, as island spirits driving colonizing Invaders off your land.

  1. Choose spiritsEach player takes a spirit and an island board; your presence pieces mark your spirit’s lands.
  2. Grow, then use powersEach round, every spirit grows (more presence, powers or energy) and pays energy for power cards. Fast powers act before the Invaders, slow ones after.
  3. Let the Invaders actInvader cards say where they explore, build and ravage (harm the land, adding blight). A land explored one round is built on the next, then ravaged.
  4. Earn fearFear powers and destroyed towns and cities earn fear cards, which weaken the Invaders and raise the terror level.
  5. Win or loseYou win by meeting the terror level’s goal (at first, no Invaders left) or by drawing the last fear card. You lose to too much blight, a spirit with no presence or an empty Invader deck.
How the game ends

Fear moves the finish line closer.

Each fear card you earn brings the Terror Level closer to rising, and each level asks less of you. At first you must clear every Invader from the island; later, only the towns and cities, then only the cities. Run the Fear Deck dry and you win outright.

Terror Level 2: Mara destroys the last town.

Three players have earned enough fear to reach Terror Level 2, so only towns and cities stand between them and the win. This is the game on the screen above.

Horizons of Spirit Island, the standalone starter version, wins and loses the same way, and there you lose when the blight pool runs out. The base game takes blight from a Blight Card instead: when its last blight comes off, you follow the card’s own instructions, which often mean a loss. The Jagged Earth expansion takes the game to 6 players. The rulebook’s optional score for comparing games is not covered here.
