How to play

How to play Scythe, in brief

Scythe is set in an alternate 1920s Europe. Your faction spreads across the map, builds its economy and sometimes fights, and the most coins at the end wins.

  1. Take a faction and a matYour mat has four sections, each pairing a top and a bottom action.
  2. Pick a new section each turnMove your token to a different section from last turn. Take its top action (move, produce, trade or gain power), its bottom action (pay resources to upgrade, deploy a mech, build or enlist), or both.
  3. Earn starsA star marks each big achievement: all your upgrades, mechs, structures or recruits, all 8 workers out, a completed objective, a won fight (twice at most), or the top of the popularity or power track.
  4. Stop at the 6th starThe game ends the moment anyone places a 6th star.
How a fortune scores

Popularity sets the rate for everything.

Find your place on the Popularity Track first. It puts you in one of three tiers, and that tier says how many coins each star, territory and pair of resources is worth to you. Two players with the same board can finish far apart.

  1. Stop at the 6th starThe game ends the moment anyone places their 6th star, even in the middle of their turn. Then everyone scores.
  2. Find your tierAt popularity 0 to 6 you get 3 coins a star, 2 a territory and 1 a resource pair. At 7 to 12 it is 4, 3 and 2; at 13 to 18 it is 5, 4 and 3.
  3. Count what you controlA territory is yours with a worker, mech or character on it, or a structure with no enemy units there. Resources on your territories count in pairs.
  4. Work out each categoryMultiply each count by your rate, add the structure bonus tile’s coins, then the coins you already had. That sum is your final fortune.
  5. Most coins winsA tie goes to most workers, mechs and structures, then power, popularity, resources, territories and stars, in that order.

Common Scythe scoring mistakes

  • Paying everyone the same rateWhat a star, a territory or a pair of resources is worth depends on each player’s own popularity tier.
  • Counting single resourcesResources score in pairs, so an odd one earns nothing. Workers never count as resources.
  • Miscounting territoriesThe Factory counts as 3. Lakes count; home bases never do.
  • Crowning whoever ended itThe 6th star only ends the game. The most coins wins, whoever placed it.

Some factions earn stars differently (Saxony may take unlimited combat stars), and the expansions have their own rulebooks. Stonemaier’s FAQ says a score over 100 is very rare outside small games with little combat, and in The Rise of Fenris campaign nobody ends below 0 coins. Rules checked on 19 October 2026 against the rules on Dized, UltraBoardGames and Stonemaier’s FAQ. Scythe is a trademark of Stonemaier Games. Tabletales is not affiliated with it.
