How to play

How to play Castles of Burgundy, in brief

Each player builds an estate from hexagon tiles, and two dice decide what you can take and where it goes. Most points come during play, and the highest score after 25 rounds wins.

  1. Five phases, five rounds eachEach phase, refill the numbered depots with tiles. Each round, everyone rolls their two dice.
  2. Two actions, one per dieTake a tile from the depot with that number, place a stored tile on a matching estate space with that number, sell goods of that number, or take 2 worker tiles.
  3. Bend the diceEach worker tile changes a die by 1, and a 6 can turn into a 1. Once a turn, 2 Silverlings (coins) buy a tile from the black depot.
  4. End after the fifth phaseThe game runs five phases, A to E. After the last, add the end bonuses.
How the points come in

Almost everything scores the moment it happens.

Each time you finish a region, place animals, sell goods or win a color bonus, you move your marker along the track. Pass 100 and you take the 100 tile; on your second lap, flip it to 200. Only a few small bonuses wait for the end.

Common Castles of Burgundy scoring mistakes

  • Scoring a region only for its sizeEvery finished region also earns the current phase’s bonus, the same for a small region as a big one.
  • Counting every worker tile at the endWorkers score 1 point per two tiles. An odd one is worth nothing.
  • Scoring tiles still in storageA six-sided tile waiting on the storage spaces at the bottom of your board scores nothing. Only unsold goods tiles score from storage, 1 point each.
  • Rescoring animals from another pastureA new animal tile only counts the same animal in the pasture it joins.

The tiebreak on empty estate spaces runs both ways: the 2011 English rulebook gives the win to the fewest, while Board Game Arena and Yucata give it to the most and call the English text a translation error. The exact size points and the bonuses for phases B to D are printed on your board, so they are not listed here. Rules checked on 19 October 2026 against the 2011 English rulebook, Board Game Arena and Yucata. The Castles of Burgundy is a trademark of Ravensburger.
