The short answer
No one tracker is best for everyone. Each of these does one job well:
- The most statistics: BG Stats. It costs $5.99 and runs on iPhone, iPad and Android.
- One free record, tied to the game database: BoardGameGeek's own play log.
- Free apps with detailed stats: Board Game Shelf and Board Record, on iPhone and iPad.
- A simple free logger: Meeple Tracker, on iPhone and iPad.
- One shared record for a whole group: NemeStats, a free website.
- No screens at all: paper, or a spreadsheet if you like building your own charts.
- The whole night, with the photos and the people: Tabletales, free on iPhone and iPad.
We make Tabletales, so we have tried hard to be fair to the others. Everything said about them here comes from their own store listings and websites, checked on 30 October 2026 (sources at the bottom).

BG Stats
BG Stats (listed in the app stores as Board Game Stats) is built for people who love numbers. When we checked, it cost $5.99 on both the US App Store and Google Play. Optional in-app purchases add more. On the App Store, the Power Expansion is $5.99, and a year of Cloud Sync, which keeps your devices in step and backs up your data, is $0.99.
- Logs: players (anonymous ones too), places, scores with plus and minus math as you type, teams, roles, expansions, a play timer, notes and pictures.
- Statistics: per game, per player and per player in each game, win percentages, an H-index, score charts and cost per play. The Power Expansion adds filters, tags and more charts.
- BoardGameGeek: it syncs your BGG collection, can post each play to BGG as you save it, and imports plays from BGG, Board Game Arena and Yucata.
- Score sheets: thousands, each made for a particular game.
- Also: it works offline, and you can send plays to other BG Stats users, so only one person has to enter them.
Fits if you want every number, you log your plays on BGG, or you play on Android. We compare it with Tabletales in more detail in Tabletales and BG Stats.
BoardGameGeek's play log
BoardGameGeek (BGG) is the big online database of board games, and joining is free. Members can log their plays there, and BGG's own app, free on iPhone, iPad and Android, keeps a list of your logged plays. An optional subscription removes the app's ads ($0.99 a month or $9.99 a year on the App Store).
Several apps on this page can post plays to BGG or bring them in from it, so a BGG log can move with you.
Fits if you already use BGG and want one free record that sits next to the game database and your collection.
Board Record
Board Record is free on iPhone and iPad, with a one-time Premium upgrade for $3.99. It is built around score sheets. Make your own for any game, by round or by score category, with rules that do the math, and share them to the cloud, or use ones other players made.
- Logs: teams, player roles, location and which expansions you played. Premium adds campaign and legacy plays.
- Statistics: high, average and low scores (by round and category too), average play length, win percentage by role, and your H-index, with the games to play next to raise it.
- BoardGameGeek: it syncs plays and your collection, and imports from BGG, BG Stats and ScorePal.
Fits if your group plays games scored in categories or in campaigns, and you want to start free.
NemeStats
NemeStats is a free website with no ads, and its makers say it will always be open source. When you register, you get a gaming group: add your players and games, invite the others, and record plays from your phone's browser.
- Statistics: games played, win and loss percentages, average players per game and longest win streak, by player, game or date range.
- Badges: become a game's Champion or someone's Nemesis, and earn NemePoints for each play.
- BoardGameGeek: import your games from BGG. BG Stats can also send its plays to NemeStats.
- Your data: export every play.
Fits if your group wants one shared record that anyone can check, on any device, for free.
Board Game Shelf
Board Game Shelf (inside, it calls itself Game Shelf) is free on iPhone and iPad. Game Shelf Pro is $4.95 a year or $11.95 for life. It starts from your collection: add games by search, by barcode or from your BGG collection, then log plays.
- Logs: players, scores, winners, time, location, notes and photos.
- Statistics: most-played games, win rates, locations, trends over time, and player ratings.
- Also: challenges, iCloud sync between your devices, and a CSV export.
- Pro adds: importing your play history from BGG, saved player groups, live sessions that track rounds, and detailed scoring for a few games.
Fits if you want your collection and your plays in one free app, with photos on each play.
Meeple Tracker
Meeple Tracker is free on iPhone and iPad, with no in-app purchases listed. It is new (its first version came out in September 2025), and it keeps things simple.
- Logs: players, scores (negative ones too), winners, playtime and who started, plus expansions and factions.
- Statistics: charts for each game and your whole collection, win rates, and a tier list of the factions most likely to win.
- Sharing: share sessions and player profiles with friends.
- BoardGameGeek: its update notes mention importing plays from BGG.
Fits if you want a simple free logger, especially for games where everyone plays a different faction.
Paper or a spreadsheet
A notebook needs no charging, and anyone at the table can write in it. A spreadsheet in Google Sheets, Apple Numbers or Excel costs nothing and gives you any statistic you can build. Lay it out with one row per player, per play. Our guide to tracking board game plays shows the layout, and we have free printable score sheets for many games.
Fits if you want no screens at the table, or you enjoy making your own charts. The catch: there are no totals unless you add them, and the photos live somewhere else.
Tabletales
Tabletales is our app, so weigh this part with that in mind. It is free on iPhone and iPad, with no ads and no in-app purchases. Android is coming soon.
Tabletales keeps the night, not just the play: when and where, who hosted, who played and who watched, every game with its scores, and photos from the table.
- Keeping score: the Scorepad works at the table: highest or lowest wins, finishing places, teams, co-op, or simply who won. Track every round or just the totals.
- The whole table: everyone at the table who is on Tabletales gets the night. Friends who aren't on the app yet are added as guests and can claim their nights later with an invite link.
- Photos: each photo stays with its night, and the Photos tab gathers every photo from every night.
- Stats: most-played games, nights remembered and who you have shared the most tables with, kept quiet on purpose. See game history and stats.
- Privacy: nothing you save is ever public.
Less good: lighter statistics than the apps above, no BGG sync (it uses BGG for game details, but does not post or import plays), no collection tracking, and no Android app yet.
Fits if you want to remember the nights: who came, the photos and the scores.
How to choose
- You want every number: BG Stats.
- You already use BoardGameGeek: its play log, or an app here that posts plays to it.
- You want detailed stats without paying: Board Game Shelf or Board Record.
- You want a quick, simple log: Meeple Tracker.
- Your group wants one shared record on the web: NemeStats.
- You want no screens: paper.
- You want the nights remembered, with the photos and the people: Tabletales.
You can mix them, too. Keep score in Tabletales and log the play on BGG, or keep score on paper and type it into an app later. It means entering a play twice, but each tool does its own job.
