Tabletales and BG Stats: which one fits your game nights?

Choose BG Stats if you want deep statistics, BoardGameGeek sync or an Android app; choose Tabletales if you want a free app that keeps the whole night, with the scores, the photos and the people who were there.

Free on iPhone and iPad.

The short answer

These are two good apps that do different jobs.

BG Stats (listed in the app stores as Board Game Stats) is a play tracker for people who love numbers. It logs each play, digs deep into the statistics, and syncs with BoardGameGeek.

Tabletales is a scorepad and scrapbook for game night. It keeps score at the table, then saves the whole night: the games, the scores, who was there and the photos.

We make Tabletales, so we have tried hard to be straight about where BG Stats is the better pick. Everything said about BG Stats here comes from its own store listings and website, checked on 19 October 2026 (sources at the bottom).

Where BG Stats is better

  • Statistics. BG Stats goes much deeper. It has stats for every game, every player and every player in each game, win percentages, head-to-head records, an H-index, score charts, play time graphs and cost per play. Its Power Expansion adds more statistics, filters and tags. Tabletales keeps a handful of quiet stats on purpose, so if you want the numbers, BG Stats wins clearly.
  • BoardGameGeek sync. BG Stats syncs your BGG collection, can post each play to BGG as you save it, and imports plays from BGG, Board Game Arena and Yucata. Tabletales takes game details from BGG, but it does not post or import plays.
  • Android. BG Stats is on Google Play today. Tabletales is on iPhone and iPad, with Android coming soon.
  • Game-specific score sheets. BG Stats has thousands of score sheets made for particular games. If your group plays games scored in categories, with a row for each kind of point, that is a real advantage. The Tabletales Scorepad numbers each round and adds it up, but it has no category rows.
  • Your collection. BG Stats tracks the games you own and want, their versions, and what you paid for them. Tabletales does not track a collection.
  • The details of a play. BG Stats records expansions and roles and has a built-in play timer. Tabletales does not time plays or track expansions.
  • Offline. BG Stats says it works offline, and syncing between your devices is an optional add-on. Tabletales needs you to sign in (with Apple, Google or email), because a night is shared with the people who were there.

Where Tabletales fits better

  • It is free. No price, no ads and no in-app purchases.
  • It keeps the night, not just the play. A night holds several games, who hosted, who played, who only watched, and where you were. Your timeline is a list of nights, each one ready to open again.
  • Photos are part of it. A photo of the board or the score sheet goes with its game, and a photo of the people goes with the night. The Photos tab gathers every photo from every night, as a scrapbook. BG Stats lets you attach pictures to plays, but it is not built around them.
  • The whole table keeps the night. Everyone at the table who is on Tabletales gets the night, and they can add photos, fix a score and leave comments. Friends who are not on the app yet are added as guests and can claim their nights with a one-time link. (BG Stats can send plays to other BG Stats users, which solves the "only one person types it in" part.)
  • One Scorepad for every game. You don't need a sheet made for your game. The Scorepad has six modes: highest wins, lowest wins, finishing places, teams, co-op, and "Who won?" for games with no points at all. Track every round or just the totals, add a messy score on the keypad, and play to a target such as 500.
  • Quiet stats, never a leaderboard. Tabletales shows your most-played games, the people you play with most and your best nights, with no percentages or rankings.
  • Privacy built around the table. Nothing is ever public. Each night is Open, Locked or Hidden, chosen by whoever saved it. Your profile is Open by default, so your crew can browse the nights you have saved, and you can switch it to Private. See how privacy works.

Who should pick which

Pick BG Stats if you:

  • want deep statistics about your plays
  • log your plays on BoardGameGeek
  • play on Android
  • want score sheets made for specific games
  • want to track your collection

Pick Tabletales if you:

  • want a free app
  • care most about remembering the night: who came, the photos, the story
  • want the whole table, including friends without the app, to keep the night
  • want a Scorepad for card games and board games alike
  • prefer stats that stay quiet

Can you use both?

Yes. Log the play in BG Stats for the numbers and BoardGameGeek, and keep the night in Tabletales for the photos and the people. Tabletales does not import from BG Stats or BGG, so this means entering a night twice.
