About the game

Wingspan

2019 · 1 to 5 players

  • BGG #38
  • 40 to 70 min

An engine-building card game about birds. You play birds into three habitats on your mat, and each new bird makes its row stronger: more food, more eggs, more cards. Everything is counted once, after the fourth round.

Year, players, time and rank from BoardGameGeek.

In Tabletales, Wingspan gets its own page: how often you play it, who with, and who holds the high score. (Example numbers.)
How to play

How to play Wingspan, in brief

Your Wingspan player mat is a nature preserve with three habitats (forest, grassland and wetland). Over 4 rounds you fill it with birds, and the most points wins.

  1. Start with birds and foodTake 8 action cubes, 5 birds, 2 bonus cards and 5 food. Keep up to 5 birds, paying 1 food for each, and 1 bonus card.
  2. Take one actionPlace a cube to play a bird (paying its food, and eggs in later columns) or use a habitat: forest gains food, grassland lays eggs, wetland draws birds.
  3. Let your birds workMore birds in a habitat make its action stronger, and many have powers that trigger when you use their row.
  4. Score the round goalA round ends when all cubes are used. One then marks the round’s goal, so the next round has a turn fewer. Play 4 rounds.
How the sheet scores

Six lines, counted once.

Nothing is scored during play in Wingspan except the end-of-round goals. When round 4 is over, go down the sheet one line at a time for everyone, then add each column.

  3. Copy the round goalsYour cubes on the goal board already show these. If players tied for a place, they add that place and the place below it for each extra player tied (two tied: that place and the next), divide by the number tied and round down; nobody else gets those places.
  4. Count the 1-point lines1 for each egg on a bird, each food token cached on a bird and each card tucked under a bird.
  5. Add the six linesMost points wins. A tie goes to whoever has more unused food tokens; if that is level too, the tied players share the win.

A tie on 88, and leftover food decides it.

Three players on the green goal side, after round 4. In round 2, Mara and Dev tied for first, so they added 5 + 2 and took 3 each (7 shared two ways, rounded down), and You came third for 1. This is the game on the Scorepad above.

Why it’s easy in Tabletales

The sheet keeps the lines. Tabletales keeps the game.

Tabletales is a scorepad and scrapbook for game night. In Wingspan you add up six lines at the end, so use the sheet below for those. Then type each player’s total, or their column as a sum: Tabletales adds it up, marks the winner and saves the game with the night.

  • Six lines on the keypadType each total, or type the column the way the sheet adds up (38 + 7 + 20 + 14 + 3 + 6) and Tabletales adds it up.
  • Ties share the trophyLeave the game on Highest wins, where every new game starts. Tied players share the trophy. Wingspan breaks a tie on unused food.
  • Wingspan gets its own pageHow many times you have played, who with, and who holds the high score, all built from the nights you save.

Common Wingspan scoring mistakes

  • Leaving out the 1-point linesEggs, cached food and tucked cards each score 1 apiece, and they are easy to miss when you only count the birds.
  • Splitting a tied goal the wrong wayTied players share their place and the places below it, one for each extra player tied, rounded down, and nobody else gets those places.
  • Scoring a goal with none of the itemYou need at least 1 of the item to score a place on that goal.
  • Counting the food in your supplyOnly food cached on a bird scores. Unused food only breaks a tie.
