Forest Shuffle
- BGG #150
- 40 to 60 min
A card game about growing a forest. You plant trees, then slip animals, plants and fungi in above, below and beside them. Almost every card pays for something else in your forest, so the final count is where the game is won.

How to play Forest Shuffle, in brief
In Forest Shuffle you plant trees and tuck animals, plants and fungi around them, then score your forest when the third winter card comes out.
- Build the deckSet the 3 winter cards into the last third of the deck, as the rules show, and deal everyone 6 cards.
- Draw 2, or play 1Take 2 cards from the deck or the clearing (the face-up cards in the middle), or play one by discarding as many others into the clearing as it costs.
- Grow your forestEvery card but a tree has two halves: slide it under a side of a tree so one half shows, and only that half counts. Some cards tuck cards into your cave.
- Stop at the third winter cardWhen it turns up, the game ends at once, even mid-turn. The highest total wins.
Every card pays for something.
Nothing is scored during play. At the end, each player scores their own forest, one card at a time. Card effects do not trigger during scoring; only the points count. These are the cards whose values come up most.

- Stop at the third winter cardThe game ends the moment it is drawn, even in the middle of a turn.
- Score the treesEvery visible tree scores on its own terms: beeches score only when you have 4 or more, an oak needs all 8 tree species, a linden pays 3 only if no forest has more.
- Score the cards around themEach card on a tree’s top, bottom, left or right scores what it says. Many pay per something else (a red fox 2 per hare) or only on a condition (a chaffinch 5 only on a beech). Work each product out first.
- Count the sets and the caveButterflies, horse chestnuts and fire salamanders score as sets. Each card tucked into your cave is worth exactly 1.
- Add it upThe highest total wins. The sources we could open give no tiebreaker, so a tie stays a tie.
Sam’s martens win it: 105.
Three players, just as the third winter card turns up. Each tally runs trees first, then the cards around them, then the cave, and anything that pays per card is worked out before it goes on the keypad. This is the game on the Scorepad above.

Count the forest. Tabletales adds it up.
Tabletales is a scorepad and scrapbook for game night. In Forest Shuffle you count each forest card by card at the table. Type each player’s total, or type the parts as you count them: Tabletales adds it up, marks the winner and saves the game with the night.

- Paying lindens 3 without the mostLindens are 1 each unless no other forest has more. A tie for most still pays 3.

Forest Shuffle scoring, answered
- How does scoring work in Forest Shuffle?
- Once the third winter card is drawn, each player scores their own forest card by card: every tree, and every card attached to a tree, scores what it says, and each card in the cave is worth 1. The highest total wins.
- When does Forest Shuffle end?
- The moment the third winter card is drawn, even in the middle of a turn. One winter card sits on top of the deck’s bottom third and the other two are shuffled into it, so winter begins two thirds of the way through and the game ends somewhere in that last third.
- How much are cave cards worth in Forest Shuffle?
- Exactly 1 point each, whatever is printed on them. In the base game, cards reach your cave through a brown bear or a raccoon.
