About the game

UNO

1971 · 2 to 10 players

A shedding game where you match the top card by color, number or symbol; the first player to empty their hand wins the hand and, if you keep score, collects points for every card the others are still holding.

Year from BoardGameGeek.

In Tabletales, UNO gets its own page: how often you play it and who you play it with. (Example numbers.)
How to play

How to play UNO, in brief

Get rid of every card in your hand before anyone else: that is UNO. You match the top discard by color, number or symbol.

  1. Deal 7 eachStack the rest face down and turn the top one over to start the discard pile.
  2. Match or drawMatch the top card, or play a Wild on anything. If you can’t or won’t play, draw one, and play it if it fits.
  3. Use the action cardsSkip makes the next player miss a turn; Reverse turns play around. Draw Two and Wild Draw Four make them draw 2 or 4 and miss a turn. Wilds let you pick the color.
  4. Call UNOSay “UNO” as you play your next-to-last card, or draw 2 if you’re caught.
  5. Go outThe hand ends when someone plays their last card. Play one hand, or score to 500.
How a hand scores

Go out first, and collect what everyone else is holding.

One player scores each hand: whoever empties their hand first. They add up every card left in the other hands, and that one number goes on their total. Everyone else scores 0 for the hand.

  1. Finish the last playIf the last card is a Draw Two or a Wild Draw Four, the next player still draws those cards, and they count.
  2. Count every hand leftEach other player adds up the cards they are holding, using the values in the table.
  3. Give it all to the winnerThe player who went out scores the whole lot. Everyone else scores 0.
  4. Stop at 500Add each hand to the running totals. The first player to reach 500 wins; only one player scores a hand, so the first there is also the highest.
One hand, added up

Hand 8: Priya goes out with a Draw Two, and wins.

Priya plays her last card, a Draw Two, so you draw two more cards before anyone counts. Every card left in your hand, and in Mara’s and Dev’s, goes to Priya. This is hand 8 on the Scorepad above.

Common UNO scoring mistakes

  • Scoring your own cardsOnly the player who goes out scores, and they score what everyone else is holding.
  • Pricing a Wild Draw Four like an action cardEvery Wild is 50. Skip, Reverse and Draw Two are 20, and a number card is worth its number, so a 0 is worth nothing.
  • Skipping the last drawWhen the final card is a Draw Two or a Wild Draw Four, the next player draws first, and those cards count.
  • Not agreeing on the points firstMattel’s 2009 classic sheet plays to 500, but its newer sheets, such as UNO Friends (2022), make each hand a game of its own. Settle which before the first deal.
Questions

UNO scoring, answered

How do you keep score in UNO?
When someone goes out, they score the cards left in everyone else’s hand: number cards at face value, 20 for each Skip, Reverse and Draw Two, and 50 for every Wild. Keep a running total; the first to 500 wins.
How many points is a Wild Draw Four in UNO?
50, the same as every Wild card. Skip, Reverse and Draw Two are 20, and number cards are worth their number.
How many points do you need to win UNO?
500. The first player to reach it wins. Some of Mattel’s newer rule sheets make the points optional and treat every hand as a complete game.

Mattel’s 2001 and 2009 sheets also give a lowest-wins method: each player adds up the cards left in their own hand, and when anyone reaches 500 the lowest total wins. The 2001 sheet adds a partners game for four, where the team that goes out scores both opponents’ hands. Rules checked on 19 October 2026 against Mattel’s classic rules (2009), Mattel’s UNO Friends rules (2022) and Mattel’s 2001 rules. UNO is a trademark of Mattel.
