How to score Crazy Eights

To score Crazy Eights, wait for someone to play their last card. That player collects the value of every card still in the other hands: 50 for each eight, 10 for a face card or a 10, 1 for an ace. For a longer game, play to 50 points for each player (150 for three); the first to get there wins.

  • 2 to 8 players
  • Eights are wild
  • To 50 points a player
  • Whoever goes out scores

About the game

Crazy Eights

2 to 8 players

A shedding game with a standard deck where you follow the top card by suit or rank, eights are wild, and the first player out of cards scores for everything the others are still holding.

How to play

How to play Crazy Eights, in brief

A race to empty your hand: each card you play must match the last by suit or rank, and eights are wild. The first player out scores what the others still hold.

  1. Deal 5 eachDeal from a 52-card deck. Put the rest face down as the stock and turn its top card up to start the pile.
  2. Match the top cardFrom the dealer’s left, play a card matching the top card’s suit or rank: on the Q♣, any club or queen.
  3. Eights are wildAn eight goes on anything. Name a suit, and the next player must play that suit or an eight.
  4. No match: drawDraw from the stock until you can. If it runs out, pass.
  5. Go outThe first player out of cards wins the hand. Play one hand, or play on to a target.
How a hand scores

Go out first, and collect what everyone else is holding.

Only one player scores in a hand: the one who empties their hand first. Every card left in the other hands counts for them, and an eight counts most of all, so an eight you hold on to too long is a gift to whoever goes out.

Common Crazy Eights scoring mistakes

  • Counting an eight at face valueAn eight left in your hand is worth 50 to whoever goes out, the most of any card.
  • Counting an ace highIn Crazy Eights an ace is worth 1, not 11 or 15 as in rummy games.
  • Mixing two scoring stylesSome tables have each player take their own cards as penalty points instead, and the lowest total wins. Agree on one before the first deal. For penalties, pick Lowest wins in Tabletales and play to 100.

Tables differ on who scores: Pagat has the other players take their own leftover cards as penalty points, and gamerules.com does the same, plays to 100 and lets the lowest total win. Bicycle gives no target; the 50 a player comes from Board Game Arena. Some tables deal 7 cards each for two players. Rules checked on 19 October 2026 against Bicycle Cards, Pagat and Board Game Arena.
