How to play That’s Pretty Clever, in brief
Six colored dice and a score sheet each are all That’s Pretty Clever needs. You mark dice in five colored areas of your sheet, and one mark can set off bonus marks elsewhere. The highest total wins.
- Roll, keep, roll againRoll all 6 dice, choose one and mark it in its color’s area (white is wild). Dice lower than your pick go to the silver platter, out of reach. Roll the rest and choose again, up to 3 times.
- Everyone else takes oneThen the other players each mark one die from the silver platter, all at once.
- Chase the bonusesSome boxes give a bonus when marked: another mark, a fox, a reroll or an extra die.
- Play the roundsEach round, everyone has one turn. Play 4 rounds with 4 players, 5 with 3, or 6 with 1 or 2.
Five areas, five ways to count.
Yellow pays for finished columns, blue and green for how far you got, and orange and purple for the numbers you wrote in. The foxes come last, and they are only as good as your weakest area.
What each area scores
| Area | Scores |
|---|---|
| YellowEach fully crossed column scores the number under it: 10, 14, 16 or 20 | Full columns |
| BlueBy how many boxes you crossed: 1, 2, 4, 7, 11, 16, 22, 29, 37, 46, 56 for 1 to 11 | Crosses |
| GreenThe number above your last crossed box: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36, 45, 55, 66 | Last box |
| OrangeAdd every number in the row. The ×2 and ×3 boxes were doubled or tripled when you wrote them | Sum |
| PurpleAdd every number in the row | Sum |
| Each foxWorth your lowest-scoring area, so a 0 anywhere makes every fox worth 0 | Lowest area |
- Add your finished yellow columnsOnly a column crossed all the way down scores, and it scores the number under it: 10, 14, 16 or 20.
- Read blue and green off their scalesBlue counts your crosses (4 crosses are 7, 9 are 37). Green scores the number above your last crossed box.
- Sum orange and purpleAdd every number written in each row. Orange’s doubled and tripled boxes already hold the bigger number.
- Score the foxesFind your lowest area. Each fox is worth that much, so add it once for every fox.
- Total it upFive areas plus the foxes. The highest total wins; a tie goes to the tied player with the best single area, and if that ties too, they share the win.
Anya wins with two good foxes.
Three players, so 5 rounds. Anya’s lowest area is green at 21, so each of her two foxes is worth 21 as well. This is the game on the Scorepad above.
