How to play Yahtzee, in brief
Yahtzee is a dice game for one player or a whole table, played over 13 rounds. Everyone fills the same 13 boxes on their own score card, and the highest grand total wins.
- Get five dice and a card eachTo pick who starts, everyone rolls all five dice; the highest total goes first, and play passes to the left.
- Roll up to three timesRoll all five dice. Set aside any you want to keep and roll the rest, twice more if you like. Dice you set aside can go back in.
- Fill one boxAfter your last roll, write the result in one empty box on your card. If nothing fits, put a 0 in a box: you can’t skip a turn.
- Play 13 roundsThe game ends when every box on every card is full. Add up each card to find the winner.
Thirteen boxes, one per turn.
Each box scores the roll you put in it its own way. The six upper boxes count a single number, and the lower boxes pay for sets, straights, five of a kind and Chance.

Common Yahtzee scoring mistakes
- Counting only the matching dice in a setThree of a kind and Four of a kind score all five dice.
- Taking the bonus for 63 anywhereOnly the six upper boxes count toward the 63 that earns 35.
- Claiming 100 after a 0 in YahtzeeThe bonus needs a 50 in the Yahtzee box. Without it, an extra Yahtzee only fills a box.
- Banking a bonus without filling a boxAn extra Yahtzee still goes in one empty box, as a Joker: its upper box if open, then Three or Four of a kind, then any other.

Tables differ on where an extra Yahtzee may go as a Joker: Hasbro’s current sheet sends it to its upper box first, then Three or Four of a kind, and only then to any other box, while the free choice house rule lets it go anywhere. Rules checked on 19 October 2026 against Hasbro’s rules sheet, Wikipedia and UltraBoardGames. Yahtzee is a trademark of Hasbro.
