How to score Point Salad

To score a Point Salad game, wait for the last card to be taken, then score each point card you kept against every veggie in front of you. One carrot can count on several cards, and some cards take points away. Add them up; the highest total wins.

  • 2 to 6 players
  • 15 to 30 minutes
  • Ends when every card is taken
  • Highest total wins

About the game

Point Salad

2019 · 2 to 6 players

  • BGG #614
  • 15 to 30 min

A quick card-drafting game. Every card is a veggie on one side and a way to score on the other, so each turn you choose between growing your salad and taking the cards that pay for it.

In Tabletales, Point Salad gets its own page: how often you play it, who with, and who holds the high score. (Example numbers.)
How to play

How to play Point Salad, in brief

Every card is a veggie on one side and a point card, with a scoring rule, on the other. Collect both, and at the end your point cards score your veggies; the highest total wins.

  1. Set up the marketWith fewer than 6 players, remove equal numbers of each veggie, unseen. Make 3 piles point side up and flip 2 from each to the veggie side: the market.
  2. Take a point card or 2 veggiesTake the top point card of any pile, or any 2 veggies from the market, and lay them face up in front of you.
  3. Flip one if you likeOnce a turn, you may turn a point card of yours to its veggie side, never back.
  4. RefillRefill the market from the piles, veggie side up. The game ends when every card is taken.
How the point cards score

Every point card looks at your whole salad.

Nothing scores during the game. At the end, each point card you kept (point side up) checks all the veggies in front of you, and the same veggie can pay on as many cards as care about it.

  1. Play until every card is goneThe game ends when the three point piles and the veggie market are all empty.
  2. Score each point cardTurn to your point cards and work each one out against all your veggies. A carrot counts for every card that cares about carrots.
  3. Count only veggies as veggiesA point card kept point side up is not a veggie. Only cards on their veggie side count.
  4. Take off the minusesA card like 3 per carrot, minus 2 per onion can come out below zero. Subtract it.
  5. Add them upYour point cards together are your score. The highest total wins.

Carrots on four cards: You win with 69.

Three players, so 9 of each veggie. Your salad: 1 pepper, 3 lettuce, 4 carrots, 2 onions and 3 tomatoes, and those carrots count on four of your five point cards. This is the game on the Scorepad above.

Common Point Salad scoring mistakes

  • Letting a veggie score only onceEvery point card looks at all your veggies, so the same carrot can count on several cards.
  • Counting point cards as veggiesOnly cards on their veggie side count. You may flip one point card to its veggie side on your turn, but never back.
  • Forgetting the minus halfA card like 3 per carrot, minus 2 per onion can cost you points.
  • Skipping a tied “most” cardBeing tied for the most of a veggie still pays the card’s holder.
Questions

Point Salad scoring, answered

How does the Point Salad scoring system work?
At the end of the game, each point card you kept scores against all the veggies in front of you, by veggie, by set, or for having the most or fewest of one. Add your point cards together; the highest total wins.
Can one veggie score on more than one card in Point Salad?
Yes. Every point card looks at all your veggies, so a single carrot counts on every card that scores carrots.
When does Point Salad end?
When the three point piles and the veggie market are all empty. Then everyone scores the point cards they kept.
