A French road-race card game: lay down distance cards toward a 1,000-mile trip, slow the other side with flat tires, empty tanks and red lights, and play safeties to shrug them off. Every hand scores, and the totals run on to 5,000.

How to play

How to play Mille Bornes, in brief

With four players, two teams of partners each try to travel exactly 1,000 miles a hand with distance cards, while slowing each other with hazards. First team to 5,000 points wins.

  1. Deal 6, draw one, play onePartners share one set of piles. Deal 6 each; on your turn, draw a card, then play or discard one.
  2. Get a green lightYour team needs a Roll card showing to play distance cards. Hazards like Flat Tire stop the other team until it plays the matching remedy, then a new Roll.
  3. Play safetiesA safety guards your team against one hazard for the hand and earns another turn. Played the moment that hazard hits, it is a coup fourré.
  4. End the handA hand ends when a team reaches exactly 1,000 miles, using at most two 200-mile cards, or when the cards run out.
How a hand scores

Miles first, then the safeties and the bonuses.

A hand ends when a side completes the trip, or when the cards run out. Either way, both sides count up what they did: the miles in their distance pile, the safeties on the table, and any bonus for how the trip was finished. With four players, in two sides of two, the trip is 1,000 miles.

Common Mille Bornes scoring mistakes

  • Scoring a coup fourré as 300It is 300 on top of the safety’s own 100, so 400 for that card.
  • Scoring only a finished tripBoth sides count their miles and safeties every hand, even when nobody gets to 1,000.
  • Giving the 400 to whoever called the extensionIt goes to the side that actually completes the trip.
  • Claiming a shutout too lateIt needs the other side to have no miles at all. One distance card on their side and the 500 is gone.

Some editions count kilometers instead of miles; the numbers come out the same. With 2 or 3 players everyone plays alone, one of each hazard comes out of the deck and the trip is 700 with an extension to 1,000; 6 players play as three sides of two. The rules do not cover 5 players. Rules checked on 19 October 2026 against Winning Moves (Classic rules) and Wikipedia. Mille Bornes is a trademark of its owner.
