Liverpool Rummy
A contract rummy game of seven deals in which each deal demands a specific set of melds before you may go down, and every card left in your hand when someone goes out counts against you.
How to play Liverpool Rummy, in brief
Each of the seven deals in Liverpool Rummy sets a contract: the melds you must lay down before you can go out. Lowest total after deal 7 wins.
- Shuffle two or three decksUse two decks with jokers, three for 5 or more players, and deal 10 each, 12 in later deals.
- Meet the contractDeal 1 asks for two sets (3 or more of one rank); later contracts mix in runs (4 or more in a row in one suit).
- Draw, meld, discardTake the top discard or a stock card, lay down your contract if you can, then discard. Once down, add to any meld. Out of turn, you may buy a discard, taking an extra stock card with it.
- Go outThe deal ends when someone plays their last card; the others count what they hold.
Going out is free. Everything you hold costs you.
Whoever goes out scores 0. Everyone else pays for every card still in their hand, whether or not they went down, and two rules worth 50 can move a deal’s score up or down.
What each card left in your hand costs
| Card | Points |
|---|---|
| 2 to 9The same for every one: a 2♣ and a 9♥ are both 5 | 5 |
| 10, J, Q, K | 10 |
| Ace or jokerBoard Game Arena makes a joker 20 | 15 |
| Going out | 0 |
| A perfect cutCutting exactly the cards the deal needs | −50 |
| A meld you start and cannot finish | +50 |
- Go out, score 0The deal ends as soon as one player plays their last card. Write 0 for them.
- Count what everyone else holdsEvery card left in a hand counts, whether or not that player went down: 5, 10 or 15 a card.
- Apply the 50sA perfect cut takes 50 off the cutter’s score for the deal. A player who starts to meld and finds they cannot finish adds 50.
- Add the deal to the running totalLower is better. A deal can come out below zero after a perfect cut, and it still goes on the total.
- Stop after deal 7The game is always seven deals, however far ahead someone is. The lowest total wins; the rules give no tiebreaker.
Deal 3: Sam goes out, and Mara’s cut pays.
The contract is two runs of four. Sam lays down everything and goes out. Jonas is caught with four cards. You are caught with six, an ace and a joker among them. Mara is caught too, but her cut before the deal took off exactly the cards the deal needed, so 50 comes off. This is hand 3 on the Scorepad above.
