500 card game score sheet

The 500 card game is scored one bid at a time. The side that wins the auction scores its bid from the chart if it takes the tricks it promised, or loses that much if it falls short. The other side scores 10 for every trick it takes. Reach 500 by making a bid to win, and keep it all on the score sheet below.

  • 4 players, 2 partnerships
  • 43 cards, joker included
  • Make a bid to reach 500
  • Minus 500 loses

About the game

Five Hundred

1904 · 4 players

A partnership trick-taking game in the euchre family, played with a 43-card deck and a joker, where the side that wins the auction must take the tricks it bid; it is a different game from the rummy game Rummy 500.

Year from BoardGameGeek.

In Tabletales, Five Hundred gets its own page: how often you play it and who you play it with. (Example numbers.)
How to play

How to play Five Hundred, in brief

Two teams bid for trump (the suit that beats the others) in Five Hundred, then must take the tricks they promised. Reach 500 on a bid you make to win.

  1. DealFrom 43 cards (a joker, red 4s to aces, black 5s to aces), deal 10 each and a face-down kitty of 3.
  2. Bid for trumpTop the last bid with 6 or more tricks in a suit or no trumps, or drop out. The winner takes the kitty and discards 3.
  3. Play 10 tricksA trick is one card from each player; follow the suit led if you can. The highest trump wins, or else the top card of that suit. The joker is top trump, then the jack of trump and the other jack of its color.
  4. ScoreBidders gain or lose their bid’s value; others score their tricks.
How a hand scores

The bidders score the chart. The others score their tricks.

The side that won the bidding, the contractors, scores only from the chart, and only if it took at least the tricks it bid in the suit it named, or in no trumps. Extra tricks earn the contractors nothing.

  2. Bid missed: lose the chartFall short by even one trick and the contractors lose the bid’s value. Totals can go below zero.
  3. The opponents count tricks10 for each trick they took, whether the bid was made or not. Against a misère they score nothing.
  4. Win by making a bidA side wins by reaching 500 on a hand where it made its bid. Points taken as the opponents cannot win the game, and a side that falls to minus 500 loses.

Why it’s easy in Tabletales

Bids in, totals out.

Tabletales is a scorepad and scrapbook for game night. In Five Hundred, pick Teams and type each hand’s points under one partner of the side that scored: Tabletales adds up each side’s total. Whether a side reached 500 by making its bid is still for the table to decide.

  • Partners added togetherTap a letter to put each player on Team A or B, then type a side’s hand under one partner. The teams bar adds them up.
  • Going set is one tapMissed the bid? Tap ± and type the bid’s value: it shows in red and comes off the total.
  • Watch 500 yourselfSet the game to play to 500 and it sits in the header. The trophy goes to the higher total, so if the side that made its bid reaches 500 with a lower total than the other side, note who really won. Watch for a side at minus 500 too.
  • And the night is keptSave it with who played and a photo from the table. Each game gets a history: how often you play it, who with, and who wins.

Common Five Hundred scoring mistakes

  • Paying the contractors for extra tricksA made bid scores just its chart value. Only all 10 tricks on a bid worth less than 250 is raised, to 250.
  • Forgetting the opponents’ tricksThey score 10 a trick even when the bid is made, though nothing against a misère.
  • Crowning the opponents at 500A side must reach 500 by making a bid. Trick points on defense cannot win it.
  • Mixing it up with Rummy 500Five Hundred is a bidding and trick-taking game. Rummy 500 is a rummy game where the cards you lay down score.

Tables differ: under the original rules the first side to 500 wins, the bidders if both get there in one hand; some tables stop the opponents scoring near 500, and some count misère as 150 or 230. Bicycle Cards has no page for Five Hundred; Pagat and Wikipedia agree on the whole bid chart. Rules checked on 19 October 2026 against Pagat and Wikipedia.
