Decrypto score sheet

Decrypto has no running score, so a Decrypto score sheet tracks tokens. Your team takes a white token each time it cracks the other team’s code and a black one each time it misreads its own. Two white tokens win; two black tokens lose. Ties go to a short tiebreak.

  • 3 to 8 players, 2 teams
  • Up to 8 rounds
  • 2 white wins, 2 black loses
  • Points only in a tiebreak

Tabletales is free on iPhone and iPad.

This is the real app screen, live. No points to type: tap the team that won, and everyone on it shares the win.

About the game

Decrypto

2018 · 3 to 8 players

  • BGG #116
  • 15 to 45 min

A team word game: each team has four secret keywords and passes three-digit codes to itself through clues, hoping its own side reads them while the other team can’t. Tokens, not points, decide who wins.

Year, players, time and rank from BoardGameGeek.

In Tabletales, Decrypto gets its own page: how often you play it and who you play it with. (Example numbers.)
How to play

How to play Decrypto, in brief

Decrypto splits the table into two teams, each guarding four secret words. You win by cracking the other team’s code twice, and lose by misreading your own twice.

  1. Form two teamsEach team hides four keywords, numbered 1 to 4, behind its screen.
  2. Give three cluesEach round, each team’s Encryptor (players take turns) draws a code, three of the numbers 1 to 4, and gives one clue for each number’s keyword.
  3. Guess the codesYour team guesses its own code every round; from round 2, the other team guesses it first. Their right guess earns them a white token, and your team’s wrong guess earns you a black one.
  4. Play to 2 of a kindAfter each round, 2 white tokens win and 2 black tokens lose. If that doesn’t settle it, or after round 8, a tiebreak decides.
How the tokens work

Two tokens of one color end it.

Decrypto keeps no running score. The tokens each team collects are the whole result, checked once at the end of every round, and points come into it only in a tiebreak.

What the tokens mean

TokenEffect
White token (Interception)Your team named the other team’s code exactly. Nobody intercepts in round 1Win at 2
Black token (Miscommunication)Your team got its own Encryptor’s code wrongLose at 2
Tiebreak: each white token+1
Tiebreak: each black token-1
Tied on points tooEach team names the other team’s four keywords; more right winsKeywords
Tied on keywordsBoth win
  1. Give the codeEach round, both teams’ Encryptors draw a code card, three digits from 1 to 4, and give one clue for each digit.
  2. Try to interceptFrom round 2, a team that names the other team’s code exactly takes a white Interception token.
  3. Read your ownA team that gets its own Encryptor’s code wrong takes a black Miscommunication token.
  4. Check at the end of the roundAfter both codes, a team holding 2 white tokens wins, and a team holding 2 black tokens loses.
  5. Break a tieIf both teams reach 2 in the same round, one team holds 2 of each, or round 8 ends: score +1 a white token and -1 a black one. Still tied, guess the other team’s keywords. Still tied, both teams win.
One finish, worked out

Round 6: both teams intercept, and it goes to points.

You and Priya are Team A, Mara and Dev Team B. Going into round 6, each team has one white token, and You and Priya also have a black one from round 3. In round 6 both teams crack the other’s code, so both reach 2 white tokens in the same round and the game goes to the tiebreak. This is the game on the app screen above.

Decrypto · Tiebreak after round 6
TeamWhite tokens, minus black tokensPoints
Mara and Dev2 white · 0 blackTwo Interceptions, no Miscommunications: 2 - 02
You and Priya2 white · 1 black, from round 3Two Interceptions, one Miscommunication: 2 - 11
Mara and Dev win the tiebreak, 2 to 1, so in the app you tap Team B. Level on points, each team would have named the other’s four keywords, and more right would have won.
Why it’s easy in Tabletales

No points to add, just who won.

Tabletales is a scorepad and scrapbook for game night. Decrypto is won on tokens, not points, so pick Teams, leave the scores empty and tap the team that won. Tabletales saves the game with everyone who played it.

  • Teams, and a tapTap a letter to put each player on Team A or B. With no points typed, the teams bar asks which team won, and everyone on it shares the win.
  • The tokens stay at the tableThe app doesn’t count tokens or run the tiebreak. Settle it with the tokens and the keywords, then tap the winner.
  • A shared win has a place tooIf even the keywords tie, both teams win. Log that game with Who won? instead and put the trophy on everyone.
  • And the night is keptSave it with who played and a photo from the table. Each game gets a history: how often you play it, who with, and who wins.

  • Stopping the game mid-roundTokens are checked only at the end of the round, after both codes are done.
  • Handing the win to one team when both reach 2Two white tokens each in the same round goes to the points tiebreak.
  • Scoring the other team’s black tokensIn the tiebreak each team adds its own white tokens and subtracts its own black ones.
Questions

Decrypto scoring, answered

How do you win Decrypto?
A team holding 2 white Interception tokens at the end of a round wins, and a team holding 2 black Miscommunication tokens loses. Anything less clear goes to the tiebreak.
What happens if both teams get 2 interceptions in Decrypto?
Each team scores +1 a white token and -1 a black one, and the higher score wins. If that ties, each team tries to name the other team’s four keywords, and if that ties too, both teams win.
How many rounds are there in Decrypto?
At most 8. If no team has won or lost by the end of round 8, the tiebreak decides it.
